THE LEGEND OF DUMANJUG

During the pre-Spanish era, a small bay along the Tañon Strait, located in the southwestern part of Cebu, was home to a village known as Dunggoan, a term meaning “dock” or “wharf.” This area, now called Barangay Tangil, was sparsely populated at the time. However, fishermen from neighboring settlements frequently used its shoreline as a docking place after a day’s catch, which explains the origin of its name.

Among the early inhabitants of Dunggoan was a prominent and well-respected figure named Ka Doman. He had two elder brothers: Ka Binonga, who lived in a village across the bay now known as Barangay Tapon, and Ka Yongyong, a native of Sitio Panlaan in the hinterland. Ka Doman was known for his integrity, strong character, and harmonious relationships with fellow villagers. One remarkable trait that set him apart was his exceptionally loud, booming voice.

Whenever Ka Doman needed provisions for his daily sustenance, he would call out loudly to his brother Ka Binonga across the bay. His powerful voice echoed throughout the village and carried across the waters to Tapon. Over time, the villagers came to associate this resounding echo with him and referred to it as “Ka Doman Dahunog” (“Dahunog” meaning echo or reverberating sound), which became his well-known nickname.

It is said that during one occasion, a Spanish officer visited Dunggoan and heard Ka Doman’s thunderous call. Curious about the sound, the officer asked the villagers about its source. They explained that it was the voice of Ka Doman Dahunog. From then on, the place gradually became known as “Kang Doman Dahunog” (the place of Doman Dahunog). Over time, this name was shortened and evolved in pronunciation—from Doman-dahunog to Dumanjug—for easier articulation under Spanish influence.

Today, the municipality’s branding as “Dahunog Dumanjug” pays tribute to this origin story. The term Dahunog symbolizes the strong, far-reaching voice of Ka Doman, representing the town’s enduring identity, unity, and the powerful spirit of its people whose presence, like an echo, continues to resonate across generations.
